Towers and Fortifications Sea Tuscany The entire Maremma territory is strewn with castles and fortresses, most of which date back to medieval times. These imposing structures were essentially built to protect the town and its inhabitants from attacks and raids. However, their centuries-old history conceals a vast cultural heritage mostly linked with legends and popular beliefs. To this day these buildings continue to fascinate visitors due to their mysterious flavor and because of the stories, some more some less factual, which are linked to these places. Often the lords at the time chose these buildings as their residence and the solidity of these structures had to be a testament to their strength and the certainty of their power. There are numerous noteworthy watchtowers spread along the coast of Monte Argentario. Erected during the State of Garrisons they were used to send signals in case of a pirate attack: the sentinels would light a bonfire at the top of each tower so that the danger signal would arrive at the main fortress situated in Porto Santo Stefano, thus readying the army to launch the counteroffensive.
